Getting Rid of Algae Stains

If you aren’t in the market for a new roof, you can clean your shingles and improve the appearance of your home. We highly recommend you hire a professional and stay off that ladder. But you can spray wash the roof yourself with a 50 percent mix of water and bleach to get rid of the algae. (Do not use a pressure washer. They’re likely to damage the shingles.)

Before you choose to clean your roof, check your manufacturer’s warranty. By doing the cleaning yourself, you may void your warranty or even your homeowner’s insurance. You should also check the manufacturer’s website for information on cleaning your shingles.

If you decide to move forward, try to avoid extremely hot days. When you’re ready, move all lawn furniture, etc. away from the area, and wet your foundation plantings first to protect them.

Once you’re finished spraying your roof rinse everything in clean water when you’re done.  Learn more.
